Today was the first day in the field for my summer field school with UCLA. We woke up early and left our hostel at 7:15 am for the walk to the site. It took us about one and half hours to get there, and mostly uphill, which is a challenge due to the altitude.
We hiked past the ruins of Sacsayhuaman, pictured below, on the way to our dig site.
Here are some photos of our site, Balcon del Diablo.
After a brief orientation to the site and the research we will be conducting, we broke up into groups and began to lay out three units. These units are re-excavations of prior units, which we are going to re-open and dig deeper to look for evidence of architectural features and ritual activity at the site.
Tomorrow we will remove the fill and then begin digging further down. I am looking forward to finding some Inca artifacts!
